A ppm-range oxygen analyzer only reads accurately when every part of the system does its job — the sample line, the filter, pressure control, temperature control, the sensor itself, and the calibration method. Miss any one of the seven and the reading becomes noise.

Sorsoh provides end-to-end service for trace oxygen analyzers — certified calibration lab, traceable calibration gases, and on-site service across Thailand for semiconductor, high-purity gas, petrochemical, and food and beverage operators who need ppm-level O₂ control.

(Process Requirement)

(Criticality)

(Historical Drift)

Gas Sampling System

Sensor

The answer depends on sensor type, analyzer construction, and process requirements.

Analyzers like the CI-PC90 use fuel cell oxygen sensors with automatic adjustment across 0–25% and selectable ranges from 0–10 ppm up to 0–25%. That capability does not remove the need for calibration — it just changes the schedule.

Calibration frequency should be set based on:

-Process requirements

-Measurement criticality

-Historical drift pattern of the specific unit

-Gas sampling system condition

-Sensor age and condition

-Plant quality / validation requirements

Setting a fixed “every 6 months” or “annual” schedule without considering these factors is not correct practice.

Sorsoh evaluates each installation and recommends a calibration interval that matches actual drift behavior — not a generic schedule.

Seven Factors That Determine Trace Oxygen Accuracy

Process Gas → Sampling Line → Filter → Pressure Regulator → Temperature → Sensor → Analyzer → Calibration Reference

Trace oxygen measurement does not depend on the analyzer alone. The reading comes from the entire system.

Process Gas → Sampling Line → Filter → Pressure Regulator → Temperature → Sensor → Analyzer → Calibration Reference

If any component has a problem, the reading will not reflect the true O₂ concentration.

1. Sampling Line —

The sampling line is one of the most common causes of inaccurate trace oxygen readings, especially at ppm levels.

Key points to inspect include:

-Tubing and fitting material compatibility

-Possible leaks or loose connections

-Excessive sample-line length

-Dead volume and response time

-Moisture or contamination inside the line

-Possible ingress of ambient air

At ppm-level measurement, even a small air leak can significantly change the oxygen reading when the actual process concentration is very low.

2. Filter — Filter

The filter protects the sensor from particles and contamination, but an unsuitable or clogged filter can create problems in the sampling system.

As a filter becomes blocked, pressure drop increases and sample flow may decrease. This can affect analyzer response time and reading stability.

Filter material is also important when the sample gas contains chemicals, vapors, or other contaminants.

For this reason, service should not simply check whether the filter is still working. The filter type, condition, pressure drop, and installation location should all be evaluated.

Process Pressure → Regulator → Flow Control → Analyzer Inlet

Trace oxygen analyzers have specific requirements for sample pressure and flow. Supplying gas at an unsuitable pressure can result in unstable readings or damage to the sampling system.

The complete pressure path should be checked:

Process Pressure → Regulator → Flow Control → Analyzer Inlet

This is particularly important when the analyzer is connected to high-pressure gas cylinders or a gas distribution system, where appropriate pressure regulation is required before the gas reaches the analyzer.

4. Temperature & Moisture —

-Sample Gas Temperature

-Ambient Temperature

-Dew Point

-Condensation Risk

Sample Conditioning

Temperature and moisture are often overlooked, but both can affect the sampling system and sensor performance.

If the sample gas contains moisture and condensation occurs inside the sampling line, it can affect the filter, tubing, and sensor.

The installation should therefore consider:

-Sample gas temperature

-Ambient temperature

-Dew point

-Condensation risk

-Filter and sample-conditioning location

For ppm-level oxygen measurement, controlling the sample condition before the gas reaches the sensor can be just as important as the analyzer itself.

5. Sensor — Sensor

-Sensor

-Exposure

-Response Time

-Zero / Low-level response

-Historical Drift

The sensor is the component that directly interacts with the sample gas, and its performance can change with operating conditions and sensor age.

For fuel cell oxygen sensors, important factors include:

-Sensor age

-Exposure to high oxygen concentrations

-Exposure to contaminants

-Response time

-Zero or low-level response

-Historical drift

Replacing the sensor alone does not guarantee an accurate analyzer reading if the sampling system or calibration reference has a problem.

Display

Analyzer → 4–20 mA / Digital Signal → PLC / DCS / BMS

Analyzer service should involve more than checking whether the display shows an oxygen value.

Response, stability, alarms, outputs, and connected control functions should also be checked.

For analyzers connected to PLC, BMS, DCS, or plant alarm systems, the output signal should be verified as part of the service:

Analyzer → 4–20 mA / Digital Signal → PLC / DCS / BMS

An analyzer may display the correct oxygen concentration while a faulty output signal sends incorrect information to the control system.

7. Calibration Reference —

Calibration Gas

-Certificate / Traceability

-Gas Cylinder

Flow Control

-Zero Gas / Span Gas

-สภาพของ Connection และ Tubing

Calibration

Calibration is the final step used to verify that the analyzer reading corresponds to a known reference concentration.

However, calibration accuracy depends heavily on the quality and traceability of the calibration gas and the complete calibration setup.

Important points include:

-Calibration gas concentration

-Calibration certificate and traceability

-Gas cylinder condition

-Regulator and flow control

-Selection of zero and span gases

-Connections and tubing condition

-Calibration procedure

Therefore, saying that an analyzer has been “calibrated” does not automatically mean that the measurement is reliable. The reference gas and the calibration setup must also be appropriate.

Service Trace Oxygen Analyzer

1. Sampling Line Air ingress, contamination, slow response
2. Filter Pressure drop, low flow, contamination
3. Pressure Unstable reading, incorrect sample delivery
4. Temperature & Moisture Condensation, sensor/sample problems
5. Sensor Drift, slow response, reduced sensitivity
6. Analyzer Display, output และ alarm problems
7. Calibration Reference Calibration bias or unreliable verification

A reliable trace oxygen measurement does not depend on the sensor alone. It depends on the complete measurement system, from the process gas and sampling line through the sensor, analyzer, and calibration reference.
